The Challenge

Gone Fishing
Little “octopuses” are at the bottom of the pool are we must retrieve them and bring them up to  us. When underwater, divers and ROVs often have to collect different types of marine samples (rocks, plants, etc). The radius is 5 cm and the height is 4 cm made out of PVC pipe. It weights 48.93 grams. Time limit TBD.

Fish ID
This task requires one to identify many organisms which are located at the bottom of the pool. In real life, Marine Scientists are sent to the bottom of the ocean to take note of what organisms pass by them and are also required to take count on how many they saw.

Operation Fix-It

What underwater oil spills occur, oil continues to spill out into the water until the hole in the pipe can be plugged or fixed in another way. This relates to marine science because scientists used ROVs to investigate what the problem was during the BP oil spill. Time limit is to be determined. The cap we need to pick up weights 51.37g so the ROV that we build needs to be able to pick up something that weighs that much. The string attached to the cap is approximately 14 cm long (not all strings are the same length) so we need our arm to be able to fit in that.

In N Out

Maneuver through a line of hoops angled at various angles. Each hoops has a width of 63.5cm and are spaced out at a range of 74-101cm from the next hoop. This obstacle can simulate having to maneuver through a sunken ship or a coral reef. The ROV has to be able to maneuver through a variety of topography of the ocean. This obstacle should take a max of three minutes with the first team winning three points, the second team winning two points and the third team winning 1 point. Since the hoops are 63.5cm, our ROV should not exceed this size.
